TOI report jolts authorities into action

Bengaluru: Following the TOI report titled ‘Kanakapura Road – A Walk Through Neglect,’ published Friday highlighting the mounting garbage and poor waste management along the stretch, civic authorities have moved to tighten waste collection and crack down on roadside dumping in Yelachenahalli.Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao inspected garbage-prone locations under Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) Friday and directed officials to identify areas facing persistent garbage problems and deploy additional auto tippers during evening hours, wherever necessary, to ensure timely waste collection.Rao noted that evening garbage collection by auto tippers had already begun in Yelachenahalli but stressed the need to strengthen services at chronic dumping hotspots. Reviewing the garbage transfer point near Yelachenahalli Lake, he instructed officials to maintain cleanliness at all times and take effective measures to prevent roadside dumping. He also directed them to identify suitable vacant land and prioritise the construction of a transfer station to provide a long-term solution to garbage issues in and around the locality. The commissioner appealed to residents to inform the corporation whenever garbage accumulates in their neighbourhoods or when auto tippers fail to arrive on schedule, assuring them that civic staff would respond immediately. Emphasising that the city’s garbage problem can be permanently resolved only through active public participation, he urged citizens to work in partnership with the corporation.Rao also warned that strict penalties would be imposed on those found dumping garbage in public places. Officials said greater public participation, improved waste collection infrastructure, and stricter enforcement would be key to addressing recurring garbage management challenges.
