New Delhi: Police have registered an FIR in connection with the alleged fake documents of a juvenile who was involved in the murder of a 17-year-old boy in an eatery in southeast Delhi’s Amar Colony in May.According to the FIR, accessed by TOI, the boy has two birth certificates. One says his date of birth is Oct 31, 2009, while another shows his birth date as Oct 31, 2010. The certificates also mention two different places of birth. The 2009 certificate was registered on Dec 29, 2009, which police said was within the prescribed period after birth. The other one was registered on Jan 27, 2014. The names of the parents are the same in both certificates.Under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, a suspect between the ages of 16 and 18 years can be treated as an adult in a case of heinous crime. The law, however, requires proof of the suspect’s age. In the current case, if the 2009 date of birth is accepted for the boy, then he was between 16 and 18 years old in May at the time of the crime. But if his age is counted from 2010, he would have been a few months shy of 16 years in May this year. Therefore, this detail could decide whether the boy is assessed for trial as an adult under the Juvenile Justice Act.Police said the first certificate, which records the boy’s birth in a hospital, was verified during the investigation. The hospital, in a reply dated June 24, confirmed that the boy was born there on Oct 31, 2009. The date is there in his Aadhaar card and passport, according to the FIR.The second certificate was allegedly used for the boy’s school admission in Delhi in the disadvantaged group category. There, the date of birth was recorded as Oct 31, 2010. A school leaving certificate, issued in Nov 2023, also carried the 2010 date of birth, police said.On May 26, a 17-year-old boy was shot in an Amar Colony eatery after an altercation with the juvenile and his associates. The juvenile and two others were apprehended. The boy who was shot died on June 1.Police seized an automatic pistol, allegedly used in the crime, from the juvenile suspect’s house.The FIR states that the boy was previously involved in a case of firing in June 2025, when he allegedly fired three rounds at a man during a quarrel in Kalkaji, injuring him.He was apprehended in the case. As he was believed to be a minor, he was produced before the juvenile justice board, where his father allegedly furnished the birth certificate that had Oct 31, 2010, as his date of birth.Police have registered an FIR against unknown accused for making such fraudulent birth certificates.They have alleged that the birth certificate with the 2010 birthday was fraudulently procured and used to give the impression that the boy was being below 16 years of age.
