Aizawl: Former Gauhati high court judge Justice Marli Vankung was sworn in on Wednesday as chairperson of the newly constituted Mizoram State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC), along with two members, Vanlalenmawia and K Lal Nghinglova.Mizoram governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh administered the oath of office at the Durbar Hall, Lok Bhavan, Aizawl.At the start of the ceremony, chief secretary Khilli Ram Meena read out the governor ’s notification appointing the chairperson and members, and then the governor administered the oath of office to Justice Marli Vankung, Vanlalenmawia and Lal Nghinglova.The ceremony was attended by CM Lalduhoma, assembly speaker Lalbiakzama, PWD minister Vanlalhlana, forests minister Lalthansanga, leader of the opposition Lalchhandama Ralte, along with legislators and senior officials.The state govt issued a notification constituting the Mizoram SHRC on October 11, 2024, following pressure from the Gauhati High Court, which was hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Zofa Welfare Organisation. The chairperson and two members were appointed on July 8, after which the high court closed the PIL on July 22.The high court was informed by the state govt through its counsel that the state finance department allocated Rs 395.72 lakh towards salaries, wages and office expenses of the commission, and an additional Rs 18.83 lakh for repair and renovation of the urban resource centre building in Aizawl to serve as the commission’s temporary office.
