CM Suvendu Adhikari at the SP’s office in Baruipur, where he held a review meeting of the police force

Tamaghna Banerjee & Monotosh ChakrabortyKolkata: Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday met the family of the 12-year-old rape-murder victim in Baruipur and assured them of swift justice. At the same time, he declared that the 26-year-old man lynched on suspicion of being involved in the crime was innocent, and ordered a murder case against those responsible for his death. The CM also gave DGP SN Gupta 72 hours to submit a report on police lapses, if any, in the handling of the investigation.“I met the family of the little girl who was subjected to brutal torture and murdered and assured them they will get justice. I also met the family members of Indrajit Tanti, who was beaten to death. Police have told me that he was innocent. He, too, will get justice. A murder case will be initiated against all those behind the killing,” Adhikari said.Taking a tough stand on alleged police lapses, he announced an internal review and warned of stringent action against any officer found negligent. “I spoke to CPs and SPs across the state over video conference and told them to ensure such incidents do not occur ever. In the presence of the DGP and other senior officers, we conducted a minute-by-minute primary analysis of the incident. I have given the DGP 72 hours to submit a report. If our personnel are found to be even 1% negligent, strong action will be taken against them,” he said.Drawing parallels with the RG Kar case, Adhikari added, “After I assumed responsibilities of chief minister, I suspended three top IPS officers handling the RG Kar case. In this case too, my message is very clear.”Vowing a sweeping crackdown on those involved in the violent protests that followed the discovery of the girl’s body, the CM said “radical and anti-national forces” were behind the vandalism and investigators had identified around 200 people.“Each one will be arrested. Political people who instigated from behind, those who were rejected in the elections, those who have gone out of power, radical and anti-national forces who instigated — they too have been identified. Their call records and other details have all been collected by the STF. They too will be properly dealt with. Govt will ensure that they are taught a proper lesson,” Adhikari said. The CM said the victim’s father had requested a police outpost at Suryapur, around 12 km from Baruipur, and directed the DGP to make it operational within seven days, even if it initially functions from a rented building. “The outpost will be inaugurated when I return here to meet the victims’ families regarding compensation in a week,” he said.He further said that he had briefed local MLA Biman Banerjee, MP Saayoni Ghosh and BJP MLAs Bikarna Naskar, Rupa Ganguly and Debashis Dhar on the progress of the investigation. The victim’s father said, “We have faith in the govt. I believe my daughter will get justice and the tormentors will get proper punishment.” The victim’s mother demanded the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrators. The mother of Indrajit Tanti, a 26-year-old auto driver in whose vehicle the minor was allegedly abducted, maintained her son was falsely accused. “My son did nothing. Police set him free but they lynched him,” she said.Adhikari said personally he is very satisfied that the family of the little girl expressed confidence and trust in the govt, in the CM and in the police. “That is my biggest achievement today,” he said.
