Dibrugarh: Jorhat marked its 43rd district day on Wednesday, celebrating 43 years since it became an independent administrative unit after being carved out of Sivasagar district on July 1, 1983.The celebrations started with the hoisting of 43 flags in front of the Jorhat district commissioner’s office, with each flag representing a year of the district’s existence. District commissioner Jay Shivani presided over the central ceremony, hoisted the flag and delivered the welcome address.“On this special occasion of district day, I extend my heartfelt wishes and congratulations to everyone present. Jorhat’s historical and cultural significance has been noteworthy. It has grown from a subdivision into a major centre of education, culture and administration. Jorhat’s transformation over these 43 years reflects the resilience and progress of its people. Our task now is to preserve our heritage while accelerating inclusive development across the district,” Shivani said. The programme included a chorus by district administration employees and speeches by scientist Dr Paran Baruah, advocate Indrajit Kakati and social worker Ranjan Saikia. Chairperson of the Jorhat Municipal Board Lakhimi Khargharia and senior district officials were also present.Earlier, the Jorhat District Administration and Jorhat Municipal Board jointly organised a Heritage Walk, starting from ‘Doss & Co’ — Assam’s first registered department store, established in 1957 in the Cally building on KB Road — and concluding at Gandhi Park. The walk was followed by an interactive ‘Adda’ at Gandhi Park, where participants recalled the district’s history.“Walking through these historic lanes reminds us of how far Jorhat has come. It is important for the younger generation to know and cherish this legacy,” said Soumitra Pujari, eminent historian and Principal of Jorhat College.A ‘Plog Run’, combining jogging with plastic collection, was also organised jointly by the Jorhat Municipal Board and NGO ‘Sahas’, covering the stretch from Baruah Chariali to Jail Road.
