New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has introduced a 5% quota for children of its teaching staff, extending a benefit that was earlier limited to wards of non-teaching employees. The decision was approved by the executive council of the university at a meeting held on April 15, after being cleared by the academic council in March. The university currently provides a limited number of reserved seats for children of non-teaching staff. With the new provision, the children of faculty members will also be covered under a similar quota, with officials indicating that existing and new provisions may be streamlined within the same framework. The move had been under consideration for some time, with JNU deliberating on extending this facility to teaching staff in line with practices at other institutions. The quota will come into effect from the current academic session, meaning eligible candidates — children of JNU staff who have appeared for entrance exams this year — will be able to avail of the reservation during the ongoing admission cycle.JNU conducts admissions to its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through Common University Entrance Test (CUET), while PhD admissions are primarily based on UGC-NET/JRF scores. The candidates applying under the staff quota will still be required to meet the prescribed minimum eligibility criteria and qualify through these national-level entrance processes. CUET results are expected to be announced soon, following which universities, including JNU, will begin their admission processes.Several central universities and higher education institutions across the country already have provisions for children of employees, particularly non-teaching staff, and in some cases, teaching staff as well. Institutions such as Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University have similar mechanisms, though the scope and percentage of such quotas vary.
