Srinagar, Feb 24: J&K produced a commanding display on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy final against Karnataka, closing at 284 for 2 in 87 overs and firmly taking control of the contest.
Playing their maiden Ranji final, J&K showed composure and maturity on a surface that offered little assistance to the bowlers, building partnerships and denying Karnataka any sustained breakthrough.
After losing Qamran Iqbal early, J&K rebuilt through a crucial 139 run partnership between Yawer Hassan and Shubham Pundir for the second wicket.
Hassan, who had endured a lean run this season, rose to the occasion with a fluent 88, setting the tone for the innings. His dismissal did little to slow the momentum as Pundir continued to anchor the innings with patience and control, ensuring the team remained on top through the day.
Pundir was the standout performer, crafting a disciplined 117 off 221 balls, laced with 12 fours and two sixes. He absorbed pressure during the morning session and gradually wore down the Karnataka attack.
His century, built on focus and shot selection, laid a solid foundation for a big first innings total. The left hander looked settled and rarely offered a chance, guiding J&K through the middle overs with authority.
Abdul Samad provided the late flourish, remaining unbeaten on 52 off 67 balls. He struck five fours and a six, lifting the scoring rate in the final session and putting further pressure on Karnataka.
His aggressive intent complemented Pundir’s steadiness, allowing J&K to finish the day strongly. Captain Paras Dogra had to retire hurt after being struck by a short delivery, but his absence did not disrupt the flow of runs.
Karnataka’s bowlers worked hard without much reward. Shikhar Shetty bowled 20 overs for 68 runs, while the pacers generated occasional movement but failed to convert chances.
The pitch remained largely placid, making sustained pressure difficult. With a current run rate of 3.26, J&K are well placed to push beyond the 400 marked on day two.
In their first ever Ranji final, J&K have already made a significant statement. If they maintain this discipline with the bat and back it up with a strong bowling effort, the team could move closer to scripting a historic maiden title.
