SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 9,64,015 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under the Udyam Registration Portal (URP) and Udyam Assist Portal (UAP), with micro enterprises accounting for almost the entire registered enterprise base in the Union Territory.

According to data presented in the Rajya Sabha, J&K has 9,60,296 micro enterprises, 3,494 small enterprises and 225 medium enterprises registered on the two portals. The data covers 20 districts of the Union Territory.

Sector-wise, 2,88,420 enterprises are engaged in manufacturing, while 3,21,711 are in the service sector and 3,53,884 are trading enterprises.

The figures were provided by Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Shobha Karandlaje in response to a Rajya Sabha question seeking year-wise and district-wise details of enterprises registered under the Udyam system during the last five financial years.

The Government launched the Udyam Registration Portal on July 1, 2020, followed by the Udyam Assist Portal on January 11, 2023, to facilitate formal registration of enterprises, including informal micro businesses.

As on July 31, 2026, a total of 9.16 crore MSMEs had registered on the two portals across the country. The national registrations comprise 9,11,07,705 micro enterprises, 5,40,908 small enterprises and 41,722 medium enterprises.

The national sectoral breakup shows 1,83,17,965 manufacturing enterprises, 3,47,33,886 service enterprises and 3,86,38,484 trading enterprises.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the overwhelming predominance of micro enterprises is evident from the figures: 9,60,296 of the 9,64,015 registered units are micro enterprises, while small and medium enterprises together account for only 3,719 units.

The data also places trading as the largest sector in J&K, with 3,53,884 registrations, followed by services with 3,21,711 and manufacturing with 2,88,420.

Neighbouring Himachal Pradesh has 4,03,720 registered MSMEs, including 4,00,655 micro, 2,841 small and 224 medium enterprises, while Punjab has 24,12,797 registrations, according to the table presented to Parliament.
