Srinagar, Feb 25: Jammu & Kashmir Police have raised a specialised high altitude and jungle response unit named “Snow Leopards” to strengthen operations in remote and difficult terrain across the Union Territory. The formation works under the Special Operations Group and focuses on high altitude, mountainous and dense forest areas.
As per official sources, the unit was conceptualised by Director General of Police (DGP) J&K Nalin Prabhat. Officials said the idea took shape after security challenges increased in remote belts where access remains tough, and weather conditions often slow down conventional operations.
“Snow Leopards” is built for precision, speed and endurance. The name reflects the qualities needed to operate in Kashmir’s rugged mountains and forest zones. The formation aims to improve rapid response to specific intelligence inputs and ensure focused action in hostile terrain.
A senior police official told Rising Kashmir that the unit has been designed to bridge operational gaps in high-altitude and jungle sectors. “We are strengthening our capability to respond swiftly in areas where terrain and weather pose serious challenges. Snow Leopards will improve our reach, reduce response time and enhance precision during operations,” he said.
According to police sources, the unit has developed capabilities in high altitude warfare, jungle operations, rapid mobility in remote sectors, surveillance and reconnaissance support, and small team tactical coordination. The focus remains on disciplined and professional conduct during operations.
Personnel are selected through strict screening. They undergo specialised training modules that test physical strength, mental resilience, navigation skills and fieldcraft. Continuous training cycles and joint exposure with other security forces ensure readiness and coordination within the broader security grid.
Officials believe the formation will improve intelligence to action timelines and help curb movement through hostile corridors in forest and mountainous belts. It is also expected to act as a deterrent in remote operational areas where difficult terrain often benefits militants.
Police leadership said the initiative reflects J&K Police’s commitment to modernisation and specialisation. The force has steadily upgraded its operational structure in recent years to meet evolving threats in diverse terrain.
With “Snow Leopards” now operational, the J&K Police aim to strengthen its presence in some of the toughest sectors of the region. The formation marks a focused step towards enhancing preparedness while maintaining high standards of professionalism and discipline.
