Srinagar, Sep 16: Jammu and Kashmir generates nearly 1,496.54 tonnes of solid waste every day, with the J&K Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC) reporting significant progress in door-to-door collection, waste processing and segregation across urban local bodies.
According to the Annual Report for 2025–26 submitted by the JKPCC under the Solid Waste Management Rules, the Jammu division has one Municipal Corporation, 9 Municipal Councils, 27 Municipal Committees and one Cantonment Board, while the Kashmir division has one Municipal Corporation, 10 Municipal Councils, 30 Municipal Committees and one Cantonment Board.
The report puts the total daily solid waste generation in the UT at 1,496.54 tonnes per day (TPD). Of this, 639.15 TPD is generated in Jammu division and 857.39 TPD in Kashmir division.
Against this, the report said that 1,489.54 TPD of waste is being collected, comprising 632.15 TPD in Jammu and 857.39 TPD in Kashmir. About 1,068.53 TPD is being treated, while the report records 340.5 TPD under landfilling in the Kashmir division.
The report said that 100 per cent door-to-door collection has been implemented across local bodies in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
Waste segregation, however, is still being expanded. In Jammu division, segregation has been implemented in 358 wards out of 528, while in Kashmir division it has been implemented in 454 out of 614 wards.
The report also records 100 per cent covered transportation of collected waste in all local bodies of both divisions.
