Srinagar, Sep 07: Jammu and Kashmir has shortlisted Manasbal Lake in Kashmir and Mansar Lake in Jammu division for development of floating solar projects under the Centre’s PM Surya Sarovar Yojana, with feasibility assessment and the required permissions currently being processed.
A J&K Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) official said the initiative envisages utilising suitable inland waterbodies, including lakes and hydroelectric project reservoirs, for installing floating solar power plants.
“Two water bodies have been shortlisted from J&K so far—Manasbal in Kashmir and Mansar in the Jammu division. The feasibility and permissions process is currently underway,” the official said.
The process would move forward after obtaining the consent of the concerned Distribution Companies (DISCOMs), following which detailed surveys of the shortlisted water bodies would be undertaken.
“DISCOMs have to give their consent first. Once that is obtained, the survey will be conducted, and the project will subsequently be sanctioned accordingly,” the official said.
Under the initiative, floating solar technology is being considered as an option to utilise water surfaces for renewable power generation without requiring large tracts of land. The approach can be particularly relevant for areas where suitable contiguous land parcels for utility-scale solar projects are difficult to identify.
The shortlisted sites would have to undergo detailed technical and feasibility assessments before a final decision on their development is taken.
The move comes alongside J&K’s broader efforts to expand solar power generation, with JAKEDA also working with district administrations to identify sizeable land parcels for utility-scale solar parks across the Union Territory.
