Srinagar, Feb 26: J&K’s curling talent Tariq Ahmad from Craft Tourism Village Kanihama has earned a major breakthrough. He will represent India at the Qatar International Curling Tournament from April 8 to 11, 2026. The event will be held under the aegis of the Curling Federation of India.
For Tariq, this is his first international assignment. It marks a proud moment for his family and for J&K’s growing winter sports community.
Tariq has built his name through steady performance. He is a five-time Senior National Gold Medalist in curling. He has also won multiple medals at the Winter Chinar Games in Gulmarg, where he emerged as one of the most consistent performers.
In 2024, he received the Best Player Award at the National Curling Championship, further cementing his position as a top curler in the country.
His journey has not been limited to one sport. Tariq also won a bronze medal in karate, showing his all round sporting ability. Alongside sports, he completed his Master’s degree in Sociology. He balanced academics and training with discipline and focus.
Curling remains a niche sport in India. In J&K, it survives on passion and limited resources. Players often train in harsh winter conditions with basic facilities. Despite this, athletes like Tariq continue to push boundaries and bring recognition to the region.
Now, as he prepares to compete in Qatar, fresh challenges await him. International exposure demands advanced training, quality equipment, and financial backing. Travel, stay, coaching, and preparation require substantial support.
Tariq has appealed to corporate houses, institutions, and well-wishers to sponsor his participation. He believes that backing from sponsors will not only ease his financial burden but also strengthen India’s presence in winter sports. Sponsors, in return, will gain visibility on national and international platforms while supporting a dedicated athlete from J&K.
His selection sends a strong message to young athletes in Kashmir. With commitment and hard work, even lesser-known sports can open global doors. From the snowy lanes of Kanihama to the international ice rink in Qatar, Tariq’s journey reflects grit and belief.
As April approaches, all eyes will be on this young curler from J&K. He carries not just his kit, but the hopes of a region that continues to carve its place in India’s winter sports map.
