Ranchi: After years of delays, the election process for 48 urban local bodies (ULBs) neared closure on Friday with counting of votes underway across the state. Some of the civic bodies got their elected representatives while in remaining places, counting was underway till late at night.Voting for the civic body elections was held on Feb 23, with an overall turnout of 63.05%. There were 4,333,574 voters, comprising 2,207,203 men, 2,126,227 women and 144 third gender voters.
Of the total ULBs, 9 are municipal corporations, 20 nagar parishads and 19 nagar panchayats.A total of 562 candidates were in fray for mayoral posts across the municipal corporations, while 5,610 nominees had filed their papers for the posts of councillors across 357 wards. As many as 41 councillors across different civic bodies had won unopposed as there were no other challengers.ULB polls were due for over three years. In state capital, tenure of all elected representatives of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) ended in 2023. In ther other ULBs, polls were due for a longer tenure.
