Jhansi: In a major upgrade of freight train brake vans, the Wagon Repair Workshop (WRW), Jhansi, under North Central Railway (NCR), has developed the country’s first prototype of a modified brake van (BVZI and BVCM) equipped with several safety and comfort features for train managers.Following the success of the prototype, the Railway Board has directed all zonal railways to adopt the upgraded design during the Periodic Overhauling (POH) and Routine Overhauling (ROH) of brake vans across the country. The brake van has been modified to address several long-pending demands of train managers (formerly known as guards).According to NCR chief public relations officer (CPRO) Shivam Sharma, one of the key features introduced in the prototype is a newly designed 360-degree swivel chair for the train manager, complete with a specially fabricated footrest to provide greater comfort during long journeys.The brake van has also been equipped with a solar-powered electrical system comprising rooftop solar panels, a Combined Control Unit (CCU), and a 12.8V, 110Ah lithium ferro phosphate battery to power lights and fans, reducing dependence on conventional power sources.The interior of the brake van has also undergone a comprehensive makeover. It now features polyamine epoxy resin flooring, improved interior graphics and a redesigned commode aimed at enhancing hygiene and usability.In addition, several convenience accessories have been incorporated, including a dedicated stand for a walkie-talkie, a bottle holder, coat hook, grab handle and a door lock fitted with a universal key.According to railway officials, the first modified brake van was completed on Feb 27, 2026, at an approximate cost of Rs 5 lakh per wagon.Following the successful development of the prototype, a tender for the modification of 400 BVZI and BVCM brake vans is currently under execution. So far, 42 brake vans have been upgraded in accordance with the new design, while the remaining units will be modified in a phased manner.
