The JD(U) on Wednesday wrote to the Lok Sabha speaker seeking disqualification for Banka MP Giridhari Yadav.

Giridhari Yadav is the third time MP from Banka. In 1996 he became MP for the first time on the erstwhile Janata Dal ticket. In 2019 he became an MP for the second time on the JD(U) ticket. In 2024, he won the seat again defeating RJD candidate Jay Prakash Narayan Yadav.

“Giridhari Yadav has been engaged in anti-party activities for a long time. During the recent assembly elections, his son contested on an RJD ticket within the Banka parliamentary constituency and he campaigned for him. On SIR, he openly expressed his opinion which was completely different from the party line. Everything is public record,” JDU w working president Sanjay Jha told ET. “We have sought his disqualification as a Lok Sabha member and written to the speaker. The speaker will decide on this.”

In July last year, Yadav broke away from the party line and had expressed strong reservations against the SIR exercise conducted by the Election Commission in Bihar. At that time, the JD(U) was in full support of the exercise being conducted in Bihar.

In last year assembly elections, his son Chanakya Prakash Ranjan joined the RJD and contested from Belhar assembly constituency in Banka Lok Sabha.

Yadav campaigned for his son in the assembly elections while he was contesting on RJD ticket.
In his notice to the Lok Sabha speaker, JD (U) alleged that Giridhari Yadav campaigned for his son who was an opposition candidate against JD(U) candidate.Yadav however denies this.

“My son is an adult, and he can join any party he wants and can contest elections. I never campaigned for him. I never defied the party line. I was with my leader Nitish Kumar and will always be with him,” Yadav told ET.

On the notice to the Lok Sabha speaker, he said that he has not received any communication and will respond to the issue once the speaker asks him to do so.

In 2017, two JD (U) Rajya Sabha MPs, Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar were disqualified from the membership in a similar case after they attended the opposition rally in Patna. This was after Nitish Kumar broke away from the RJD and formed a government with the BJP in the state in July 2017. Sharad Yadav moved to the Delhi High Court and later Supreme Court against his disqualification. However the apex court upheld his disqualification by the Rajya Sabha chairman.
