Jaipur: The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) is sourcing mature trees from nurseries in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, and Pune in Maharashtra, for a large-scale plantation drive across Jaipur under Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s “Hariyalo Rajasthan” vision.JDA commissioner Siddharth Mahajan said the trees have been selected to match a planned colour theme and enhance Jaipur’s landscape during the flowering season.“High-quality trees, over 10 feet tall, are being planted across the city. Special attention is being paid to their height, root ball and root-shoot ratio so that they establish quickly after transplantation. These improved saplings will grow into 15-25 ft-tall, sturdy trees with dense canopies over the next three to five years,” Mahajan said.

He added that the plantation drive would not only provide shade but also help control air pollution, absorb carbon and reduce urban temperatures.Mahajan said the JDA has discontinued earlier unscientific plantation practices, particularly planting trees on road medians without removing asphalt, which often led to root coiling and stunted growth.“Now, asphalt is being removed wherever required and replaced with fertile soil to adequate depth and width. This will allow natural root growth and help develop strong, shady green belts in the coming years,” he said.Officials said the avenue plantation includes species such as Terminalia, Tabebuia, Pride of India, Kachnar, Amaltas, Spathodea, Gulmohar, Maulshree, Parsa Peepal, neem and Ashoka. Bougainvillea, Lusophyllum and Tecoma are being planted on road dividers.
