Ludhiana: Safety hazards and failing infrastructure are overshadowing the education of nearly 300 students at a “smart school” of this district, despite govt claims of modernisation.The Govt Primary Smart School (Basic) in Jagraon currently serves 287 students amidst deteriorating conditions. Three classrooms are officially unsafe, yet they remain adjacent to active learning spaces, posing a daily risk to children and staff. Outside the gates, rampant encroachment and street vendors block the entrance, further compromising student safety.During the summer heat, the facility also lacks basic water filtration. Students are forced to drink directly from unfiltered taps, a deficiency school officials confirmed. Inside the classrooms, walls are crumbling, and the building’s fire safety is limited to a single small extinguisher.While the Punjab govt has issued grants for “smart” upgrades, the school’s reality lags behind its title. School officials stated that while some requirements have been reported to authorities, many needs remain unaddressed.Deputy district education officer (primary) Manoj Kumar defended the department’s efforts but acknowledged that administrative delays often hinder progress. He noted that headteachers and staff are frequently overwhelmed by non-teaching duties, which can delay the reporting of critical infrastructure needs.The officer promised to investigate the specific conditions on the Jagraon site.
