Fresh monsoon showers continue as southwest monsoon completed its advance over the country.

Gurgaon: Fresh morning showers brought much-needed respite from the heat on Thursday, pushing the minimum temperature down to a statewide low of 21 degrees Celsius recorded at the Gurgaon station. A maximum temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius was logged by the Gurgaon KVK station.The IMD observatory recorded 8 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am, while automatic weather stations reflected the highly localised nature of the rain, recording 36 mm at Gurgaon AWS and 26.5 mm at NorthCap University.The department has forecast light to moderate rainfall at most places in Haryana over the next 24 hours and at many places on Friday. Rainfall activity is expected to ease thereafter, with showers likely at a few places on July 11 and 12 before becoming isolated over the following days.IMD has issued an orange alert for northeastern Haryana, warning of very heavy rainfall exceeding 12 cm on Friday. Downpours of 7 cm or more are also expected across northern and eastern areas, including Chandigarh, through July 13. While Friday carries the highest risk of severe weather, rain intensity is projected to gradually decrease over the subsequent days.Warnings said that intense rain may cause waterlogging, closed underpasses, traffic gridlock, disrupted services, rising river levels and severe damage to standing or open crops.Currently, an active north Indian monsoon trough and a north Pakistani western disturbance are influencing the weather to sustain widespread rainfall across Haryana and adjoining states.According to IMD’s Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, the southwest monsoon advanced into the remaining parts of the north Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab on July 9, completing its nationwide advance a day later than the normal date of July 8.Rainfall was already reported from several parts of Haryana on Thursday, with Bahadurgarh recording 8 cm, Uchani AWS 7 cm and Manethi 6 cm. Thunderstorms were also reported at isolated places across the state.IMD records show that while the monsoon covered the entire country on July 9 this year, it completed its advance on June 27 in 2025, July 2 in 2024, July 2 in 2023, July 2 in 2022, July 13 in 2021 and June 26 in 2020. Since 1971, the earliest nationwide coverage was June 16 (2013) and the latest was Aug 15 (2002).
