Ghaziabad: Since the rollout of Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in Ghaziabad in Jan, over 1 lakh challans worth Rs 5.2 crore have been issued for violations in less than four months from Feb. Riding without a helmet topped the list, accounting for 93% of fines with over 97,000 challans issued, followed by triple riding, with more than 5,000 cases.“The system was introduced in Jan, but we started generating challans from Feb,” said municipal commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik.Currently, the ITMS project only tracks four violations – riding without a helmet, triple riding, red light violation and stop line violation. Of the total challans, 9,74,874 were issued for riding without a helmet, followed by 5,245 fines for triple riding. Red light violations and stop line violations accounted for 659 and 461, respectively.“It is evident now under which heads maximum traffic violations come, and the traffic department will have to devise and enforce traffic rules accordingly,” Malik added.Cameras are set to be installed at 78 spots across the city, including stretches like Hapur tri-junction to Mohan Nagar, Mohan Nagar to Seemapuri border, Tulsi Niketan to Nag Dwar, Elevated Road to Hapur Chungi, ALT to Meerut tri-junction, Hapur Chungi to Atma Ram Steels, Old Bus-Stand to Ambedkar Road, and Hapur tri-junction to Lal Kuan.Other key features of the ITMS project include pan-tilt-zoom cameras, red light vehicle detection systems and speed violation cameras. The artificial intelligence component can identify traffic violations such as riding without helmets.Traffic data shows that a total of 4,64,229 fines were issued across the district during the same period last year. These fines covered all traffic violations and all spots across Ghaziabad. On the other hand, ITMS only covers four violations and is only operational in the city or municipal area so far.Last year, riding without helmets accounted for 60,590 challans in Feb, 61,341 in March, 50,858 in April and 21,129 in May. Triple riding accounted for 7,443 challans in Feb, 6,850 in March, 4,305 in April and 2,705 in May. In Feb 2025, red light violations accounted for 2,476 challans, while the number was 1,802 in March, 1,321 in April and 432 in May.
