Buxar: An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan died after being run over by an unidentified vehicle, suspected to be a sand-laden truck, on the Dumraon–Bikramganj Road (NH-120) on Thursday night. The accident took place near Khalwa Inar under Koran Sarai police station area.The deceased was identified as Dhanji Kumar Yadav (39), the only son of Mangru Singh and a resident of Nazirganj village. He was serving with the 26th Battalion of the ITBP in Ludhiana, Punjab.According to police, Dhanji had visited his village on Thursday evening to meet his parents and attend to some household work. After buying essential items, he left for Dumraon around 9.30pm, where his wife and children live in a rented house near the Teachers’ Training College for the children’s education.Near Khalwa Inar, an unidentified vehicle allegedly hit and ran over him, killing him on the spot. Police suspect a sand-laden truck was involved. Residents alleged that after night-time restrictions on heavy vehicles are lifted, the Dumraon–Bikramganj Road gets crowded with sand-laden trucks, making travel dangerous. Locals blamed reckless movement of such vehicles for the accident.Dhanji was the only earning member of the family. His father was in shock, while his mother, wife and sisters wept inconsolably. Villagers gathered to support the bereaved family.On receiving information, Koran Sarai police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. On Friday, Dhanji was cremated with full state honours at Muktidham in Buxar. ITBP personnel paid tribute with a ceremonial guard of honour as family members and villagers bid him a tearful farewell.Villagers described Dhanji as a brave and hardworking young man who joined the ITBP in 2012. He had been on leave since June 14 and was scheduled to return to duty on June 28. However, the accident claimed his life just days before he was to resume service.The incident cast a pall of gloom over Nazirganj village, where hundreds joined the funeral procession to pay their last respects.
