Chennai: An 11-month-old boy sustained a severe head injury after falling from the second-floor balcony of his home in Semathamman Nagar, Koyambedu, on Monday, police said. The child, identified as Thanigaivel, is the son of Thennarasu, an employee of a private firm. Police said the child’s mother was feeding him while standing on the balcony. She later left him there briefly and went to the kitchen to fetch water. In her absence, the boy slipped through a gap in the iron grill and fell to the ground below.Thanigaivel was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he is being treated for a severe head injury. While Koyambedu police have launched an investigation into the incident, doctors called for awareness for the prevention of such falls.Senior paediatrician Dr Indumathy Santhanam, state nodal officer for establishing paediatric resuscitation and emergency medicine units in all secondary and tertiary care hospitals across TN, said falls from heights tops the list in paediatric trauma cases. “The number of children involved in road accidents is far less than the number brought in with injuries due to falls,” she said.
