Ahmedabad: An analysis of 731 suicide and accidental-death cases, recorded by city police between Jan 2025 and Aug 2026, shows that Ahmedabad’s eastern belt and industrial hubs account for the heaviest concentration of cases.Odhav topped the list across all police station jurisdictions with 59 cases, followed by Narol with 55, Ramol with 49, and Amraiwadi with 40. Together, these four contiguous industrial and blue-collar residential zones logged 185 cases— representing over 25% of all recorded cases in the dataset.Other eastern hubs also reported high totals, such as Nikol (34 cases), Vatva (31), and Khokhra (21). In contrast, northern and western belts recorded suicide cases in clusters tied to specific infrastructure hubs. Chandkheda and Sola reported 27 cases each, while Sabarmati logged 26 cases.
Stressors in Ahmedabad
The heavy clustering in Odhav, Narol, Vatva, and Amraiwadi underscores the intense social and economic vulnerabilities within Ahmedabad’s industrial belt. These areas’ hallmarks are high population density, low-income housing settlements, and a dense concentration of migrant factory workers and daily-wage labourers.Experts say that economic instability, long working hours, lack of local family support networks, and dense living conditions make residents in these industrial clusters particularly vulnerable to acute psychological distress.GRAPHICAL ELEMENTAreas with high suicide numbers(Jan 2025 – Aug 2026)Area | Cases1. But police data indicates that this swathe is also where human distress is most concentrated.Urban sociologists and ground workers highlight several systemic pressures driving high distress rates in the eastern industrial corridor.“In worker colonies, economic shocks translate instantly into personal crises,” said a community health coordinator in Narol. “Without accessible mental health clinics in these industrial hubs, stress builds up without any avenue for relief.”BoxStress pointsHigh migrant ratio: Tens of thousands of workers live away from home, lacking extended family structures or community safety nets to turn to during crisesFinancial fragility: Irregular wages, debt traps, and inflation place severe strain on working-age adults (18-45 years) who make up over 74% of all victims in the datasetUrban density: High-density tenement housing (chawls) and informal settlements offer little personal space or privacy, amplifying domestic frictions
