For many people, Japan is a dream travel destination known for its cherry blossoms, spotless streets and efficient public transport. But according to an Indian IT professional who has spent the last 10 years living there, the country is just as impressive when it comes to everyday life and work.
Ankit Purohit, an IIM Kashipur alumnus currently based in Japan, explains in his Instagram video why he continues to call the country home after a decade. Interestingly, he titled the video “Drawbacks of Living in Japan”, only to list benefits that have made him stay for so long. Clean air and hassle-free commuting
One of the biggest advantages Ankit highlighted was Japan’s air quality. He shared that the Air Quality Index (AQI) typically remains below 50, offering residents clean and breathable air throughout the day. For many Indians accustomed to battling pollution, this comes as a refreshing change.
Another aspect he praised was Japan’s world-famous public transportation system. According to Ankit, trains and buses are so punctual and reliable that being late to work is rarely a concern. He also noted that daily commutes are peaceful, with passengers generally maintaining silence or speaking softly, creating a calm atmosphere even during rush hours.
A work culture that values employees
Ankit also spoke positively about Japan’s workplace environment. Contrary to the perception that work life in Japan is overly demanding, he said that going to the office does not feel stressful. One reason is the structured compensation system, where employees are paid appropriately for overtime and for working on holidays or designated off-days. This ensures that extra effort is recognised and rewarded rather than simply expected.
The IT professional further highlighted the quality of public services available in Japan. While residents pay taxes, they also receive tangible benefits in return, including healthcare coverage, excellent infrastructure, public safety, and efficient civic services.
According to Ankit, it is this combination of clean surroundings, reliable transport, fair workplace policies and high-quality public services that contributes to Japan’s exceptional standard of living.
