Panaji: Prices of Mancurad mangoes have witnessed a steep decline of nearly Rs 1,000 per dozen within a week, bringing some relief to customers, as the summer fruit season gains momentum in Goa. As of this week, Mancurad mangoes are now being sold at around Rs 1,500 per dozen in local markets, as opposed to Rs 2,500 last week.The Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Mancurad mango, often referred to as Goa’s signature variety, is known for its rich aroma, sweetness and limited cultivation. It is these factors that contribute to its premium pricing every year.Traders said the price correction is part of a seasonal trend. The season began in February with limited supply, commanding premium prices ranging between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 per dozen. The initial high rates were attributed to early harvests, low volumes and strong demand among mango enthusiasts. “However, with more orchards now entering the harvesting phase, supply has improved steadily over the past few weeks. This has led to a drop in prices, making the mangoes more accessible to a wider section of consumers,” a fruit vendor said.While the current rate of Rs 1,500 per dozen is still relatively high, some consumers are hopeful for further price reduction as the harvest reaches its peak. Vendors say prices are likely to stabilise further depending on weather conditions and overall yield, with the possibility of additional drops, if supply continues to rise steadily through April and May. “Once later varieties start surfacing in the market, the hype around Mancurad reduces and the prices further fall to as low as Rs 600 per dozen,” a vendor said.
