Ahmedabad: The state unit of the Congress party has demanded immediate implementation of insurance scheme for farmers who suffer crop losses, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), in Gujarat.Speaking to reporters at the GPCC headquarters, party leader Shaktisinh Gohil said, “The Union agriculture ministry says that farmers from all across the country are getting benefits of the crop insurance scheme. Gujarat is the only state where farmers are not covered under crop insurance scheme.”He added that the Union govt has clearly stated in the reply to his query that the Gujarat govt does not implement the crop insurance scheme and hence it was not in a position to pay a single rupee to Gujarat’s farmers for their crop losses.Quoting a letter dated Nov 25, 2025 written by Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Gohil said, “The Union minister asked the Gujarat govt to implement the crop insurance scheme for farmers. My question to the Gujarat govt is why are farmers of the state being deprived of benefits under the crop insurance scheme? The PMFBY should immediately be implemented in Gujarat.”Gohil said that last year, farmers suffered very heavy losses because of unseasonal rain, but they received a very meagre amount as compensation.
