IMD issues red alert for Goa

Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall across Goa for July 24. The alert warns of intense rain activity accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph.According to IMD’s bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places, with extremely heavy showers expected in isolated areas on July 24. The alert comes as Goa continues to experience widespread rain activity, contributing to already swollen seasonal totals.Following the red alert, the IMD has also placed Goa under an orange alert for July 25, with a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across both districts.A few locations may experience heavy rainfall, with very heavy rain at isolated places, the department said. Wind speeds are expected to remain in the 40-50kmph range, gusting to 60kmph.The meteorological department has further cautioned of squally weather along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast with wind speeds between 45-55kmph, gusting up to 65kmph till July 27. On Wednesday, several locations in the state reported rainfall totals exceeding 100mm, with Dabolim at 114.8mm, Mormugao at 107.2mm, Panaji at 104.8mm, and Ela (Old Goa) closely behind at 98.4mm.The heavy downpour led to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures across Goa as Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 27.4°C, nearly 2°C below normal, while Mormugao registered 26.4°C, which is 3°C below normal — further underscoring the impact of widespread rainfall and overcast conditions.As of date, Goa has received 70 inches of rainfall since the onset of the southwest monsoon on June 1.Rajtilak Naik
