Bodhan AI, incubated at IIT Madras, will train one million teachers on artificial intelligence by 2027.

Chennai: Bodhan AI, a centre for excellence in AI for education incubated at IIT Madras, will train one million teachers on artificial intelligence for everyday teaching by 2027.

The programme introduces a structured AI-integrated teaching workflow, ensuring scalable adoption across central, state and govt-supported schools. By enabling teachers to use AI for routine and high-effort tasks such as lesson planning, worksheet generation, multilingual content delivery and evaluation, it would reduce the workload.

IIT Madras said it would improve consistency and quality of teaching materials and enable more personalised learning experiences. Lauding this initiative, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “By integrating AI into everyday classrooms, we are not merely introducing technology; we are empowering our teachers to become architects of a future-ready India.”

IIT Madras director V Kamakoti said, “India’s strength lies in its scale and diversity, and technology must rise to meet that complexity. As AI begins to reshape education, building AI literacy among teachers becomes foundational to ensuring meaningful adoption.”

“Integrating AI into everyday teaching practices will enable teachers to enhance pedagogy, improve efficiency and deliver better learning outcomes at scale,” he added.

Mitesh Khapra, principal investigator, Bodhan AI, said, “Our goal is simple but ambitious: to make AI a trusted co-pilot for every teacher in India. This programme moves beyond awareness to real, daily usage, helping teachers save time, improve instructional quality and focus more on what truly matters: student engagement and learning.” The initiative will be rolled out in phases, undertaking pre-pilots and pilots through the coming months, leading to the launch of the first public cohort on Teachers’ Day (Sept 5), and scaling to 1 million teachers by 2027. It is expected to create a fully integrated AI-enabled classroom ecosystem, rather than isolated adoption.
