Kanpur: An assistant professor at IIT Kanpur has lodged an FIR at Kalyanpur police station against her husband, a professor at the institute, accusing him of assault, marital cruelty, criminal intimidation and harassment after she confronted him over his alleged extramarital relationships.According to the complaint, the assistant professor, who resides on the IIT Kanpur campus, is posted in the Cognitive Science department while her husband is a professor in the departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Cognitive Science. The couple married on Dec 14, 2012, and have two minor sons.The complainant alleged that she had faced mental and physical harassment throughout their nearly 14-year marriage. She claimed her husband had earlier been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a married PhD scholar under his supervision and is currently involved with a female colleague from the institute. She alleged that whenever she questioned him about these relationships, he subjected her to physical assault and threats. According to the complaint, on Jan 30, 2026, she found explicit messages exchanged between her husband and the female colleague on his mobile phone. She alleged that he snatched the phone from her, deleted the messages and assaulted her for objecting to his alleged affair.The complainant further alleged that on Nov 11, 2025, her husband dragged her from the children’s room to the kitchen, tightly held both her hands and threatened her with a large knife. She also referred to another confrontation on Jan 15, 2026, after, she claimed, one of his alleged lies related to the woman was exposed.She said the repeated harassment and abuse forced her to shift with her children to a separate residence on the IIT-K campus.The woman also alleged that during one confrontation, her husband assaulted her and forcibly removed her mother and maternal uncle from their residence.ACP Kalyanpur Dilip Singh said, “The complainant has submitted photographs of her injuries and other supporting evidence. The allegations are being investigated. Appropriate legal action will be taken if the accused is found guilty,” the ACP said
