Gorakhpur: A 45-year-old IIT engineer was found dead in his apartment in Gorakhpur’s Sahara Estate after neighbours alerted police about a foul smell emanating from the flat. The body, believed to be three to four days old, was recovered from a flat in Malhar Apartment on Friday, police said.The deceased, Abhishek Tripathi, lived alone. Police broke open the door after repeated attempts to contact him failed. The post-mortem examination could not immediately ascertain the cause of death, officials said.According to family members, Abhishek had studied at IIT and worked for a multinational company in Noida. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he shifted to Gorakhpur while working from home. He reportedly lost his job around four years ago and had since been battling mental health issues. His treatment was arranged in Lucknow, but his condition did not improve fully.His younger brother, Ambreesh, an IT professional based in the United States, financially supported him and is travelling to Gorakhpur for the last rites. Abhishek was unmarried.Neighbours said he had become increasingly isolated and had not been seen for several days.CO GIDA Kirti Nidhi Anand said the flat was locked from inside and the exact cause of death remained unclear. “The room was found in disarray. The mobile phone is locked and efforts are underway to access it. Further investigation is in progress,” he said.
