Bengaluru: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) will set up its first overseas campus in Indonesia, the institute on Tuesday said the venture will be launched in two phases. It will begin with short-duration executive education programmes before expanding to degree-granting courses.According to IIM-B, the IIMB (Singhasari) campus in Indonesia will offer executive programmes for senior leaders and professionals preparing for leadership roles. The curriculum will cover core management disciplines as well as emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, global supply chains, climate and sustainability, and healthcare. The institute will also introduce degree programmes, while candidates in Indonesia will gain access to IIM-B’s repository of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to complement classroom learning. IIM-B is the designated nodal agency for management education on the government’s SWAYAM platform. The institute said the initiative would extend beyond academics, fostering research collaborations, faculty development, consulting engagements, policy partnerships, student exchanges and industry linkages across Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region.“IIMB acknowledges the support extended by the Government of India and the Government of Indonesia in advancing this initiative and facilitating the establishment of the campus,” the institute said in a statement. The announcement follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks during a joint press interaction with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Monday. “We are going to establish a campus of India’s prestigious management institute, IIM Bengaluru, in Indonesia, which will greatly benefit the youth across the entire ASEAN region,” Modi said. The overseas campus will come up at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ), based on a memorandum of understanding signed between IIM-B and the Singhasari SEZ on July 6 at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta. The agreement was signed by Prof U Dinesh Kumar, director-in-charge, and Prof Jitamitra Desai, professor and member, board of governors, on behalf of IIM-B.Prof U Dinesh Kumar said the partnership would help build a new generation of business leaders. “This partnership will create a significant impact by developing a leadership pool that will lead not only companies in Indonesia but also global corporations,” he said.Prof Jitamitra Desai said IIM-B’s expertise in management education and research positions it well to establish Indonesia as a major destination for business education.“With our strength in management education and research, IIMB is well positioned to deliver high-quality programmes and help position Indonesia as a global hub for business education. This initiative will enhance employment opportunities and strengthen the Global South’s position as a destination for quality education and business leadership,” Desai said.
