Hyderabad: After a week of widespread monsoon showers across Telangana, Hyderabad has significantly narrowed its seasonal rainfall deficit, though the city still remains 18% below normal, just a percentage point away from slipping into the ‘deficient’ rainfall category.According to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data as of Monday, Hyderabad has received 245 mm of rainfall against the seasonal normal of 297.7 mm. The latest spell has helped improve the city’s position, reducing the deficit from 34% a week ago to 18% after a largely dry July.Rainfall, however, has been highly uneven across the city. Tirumalagiri has recorded the highest deficit at 45%, followed by Saidabad (35%), Maredpally (31%), Amberpet (27%), and Nampally and Charminar (26% each). Secunderabad and Himayatnagar remain 21% below normal, while Khairatabad has a 24% shortfall.In contrast, Golconda has received 19% excess rainfall and Bahadurpura 5% above normal. Shaikpet, Ameerpet, Musheerabad and Asifnagar have recorded near-normal rainfall.Meteorologists said another spell of widespread rain could substantially bridge the remaining deficit, but current weather patterns do not favour such an event in the coming days.“The past week’s rains have significantly improved Hyderabad’s seasonal rainfall position. Another spell of similar intensity could wipe out most of the remaining deficit, but prevailing weather conditions do not indicate widespread rainfall during the first half of Aug,” said YV Rama Rao, senior meteorologist, TGDPS.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places over the next few days. Westerly to southwesterly winds of 6-8 kmph are expected, with maximum temperatures around 34°C and minimum temperatures near 24°C.
