Hyderabad: Syed Sohailuddin, who hails from the city and was brutally stabbed multiple times in a suspected hate crime at a shopping mall in Utah, US, last month, has been discharged from the hospital but remains bedridden as he begins a long recovery, according to his family.Family members said Sohailuddin suffered severe injuries to his neck, chest, back, hands and several other parts of his body in the attack. He has undergone three surgeries so far, and doctors have advised another surgery in about two months as part of his treatment. His recovery is expected to take several more months.His wife, who is pursuing her studies in the US, is now single-handedly caring for Sohailuddin while also looking after their two young children.“It is an extremely difficult situation for her. She has two small children to care for, is attending classes, and is also taking care of Sohail around the clock. She has no family there to support her. The physical and emotional burden is taking a toll on her mental health,” a relative in Hyderabad told the STOI.The family said they are yet to receive US visas despite applying soon after the incident, leaving them unable to travel and support the couple during the crisis. They added that they have not received any update from the Indian consulate regarding the status of their visa applications.The attack took place on July 13 at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, where Sohailuddin was working at a kiosk. According to police, the accused, identified as Peter Michael Larsen, allegedly approached Sohailuddin under the pretext of asking for water before questioning him about his identity. He then allegedly pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed him.Investigators said the suspect later admitted to targeting Sohailuddin because he was Muslim and allegedly told officers that he intended to kill Muslims. Bystanders intervened, disarmed the attacker and restrained him until police arrived. Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected hate crime, and the accused has been charged with multiple offences, including attempted murder.
