T’puram: Sreekaryam police booked a man and his mother for allegedly assaulting his wife and their one-and-a-half-year-old child following a dispute over dowry. The accused are Shaiju, 40, of Panavila, Poudikonam, and his mother Thankamani, 62. The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Ashwathi, 32, of A K Nagar, Chempazhanthy who sustained injuries in the alleged assault. According to the complaint, Shaiju had been repeatedly harassing and physically assaulting Ashwathi, allegedly with the consent of his mother, claiming that the gold ornaments and Rs 2 lakh given at the time of their marriage were insufficient. Unable to endure the alleged harassment, Ashwathi left her matrimonial home with her child and returned to her parental house on July 27. Police said Shaiju allegedly reached her place the same day and forcibly took the child. Later, around 1pm, when Ashwathi and her mother went to the matrimonial home to bring the child back, Shaiju and Thankamani allegedly attacked her. The woman alleged that she and the child were assaulted during the incident. Following her statement after receiving treatment for her injuries, Sreekaryam police registered a case under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to cruelty by husband or relatives and voluntarily causing hurt. Further investigation is under way.
