Thiruvananthapuram: Vanchiyoor police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his wife and attempting to murder her over a dispute regarding gold ornaments. The accused, Shambhu Dev of Palkulangara, had allegedly been demanding gold from the woman, a Pettah native, over the course of their relationship. When she refused to hand over more ornaments, he attacked her with a stick, striking her on the head and body, causing serious injuries. The woman was hospitalised and her condition is stated to be stable. Police said Shambhu Dev has a criminal background, and that nine cases, including assault and drug-related offences, have been registered against him at Vanchiyoor and Medical College police stations. He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. tnn
