TNN Ludhiana: Khanna police on Thursday said that the family of a drug peddler has been granted relief from the proposed demolition of their house after local residents assured authorities that no illegal activity would be allowed in the area in the future. The action was reviewed as part of the Punjab govt and police initiative to adopt the notorious Meat Market area of Khanna, known for drug trafficking. According to an official statement, demolition orders had been issued for the house which belonged to the grandmother of a drug trafficker operating in the locality. Before proceeding, teams under the directions of SSP Dr Darpan Ahluwalia held meetings with residents and carried out a detailed assessment of the situation. The statement said residents promised that they would not permit the trafficker to re-enter the area and would ensure that no illegal activity is carried out. Considering the family’s financial condition and the age of the grandmother, authorities decided to adopt a humanitarian approach. The administration opted for leniency, saying it aimed to balance strict enforcement with social responsibility. The statement added that “on humanitarian grounds, the decision was taken not to demolish the house, thereby giving the locality an opportunity to reform.” SDM Swati Tiwanna and DSP Vinod Kumar were present during the interaction. They sensitised residents about the harmful effects of drugs and reiterated that under SSP Dr Ahluwalia, Khanna Police is taking “sensitive and effective steps” to build a drug-free society.
