Chandigarh: Haryana will install 775 automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at petrol pumps in four NCR districts to identify end-of-life vehicles and enforce environmental norms, transport minister Anil Vij said on Monday.The Rs 41.7-crore project, approved by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, will cover Gurgaon (249 cameras), Sonipat (215), Jhajjar (195) and Faridabad (116) in the first phase. The state will eventually require around 2,780 ANPR cameras under the broader plan.The cameras will scan vehicle number plates at fuel stations and flag vehicles that have crossed their legally permitted operational life, enabling authorities to prevent them from continuing to ply in violation of environmental norms.The move follows directions from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Vij said installation of the cameras must be completed by September 30, 2026, with fuel stations in Haryana barred from supplying fuel to end-of-life vehicles registered in the state from October 1.Vij said the government was working to meet the deadline and that ANPR-based monitoring would make identification of old vehicles more accurate and systematic.The system is part of wider measures to curb vehicular emissions and improve air quality in the NCR by linking fuel supply points with automated vehicle identification.
