Mohali: Punjab Police has taken custody of Karamveer Singh, a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, following his deportation from Canada, director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday.Karamveer, a resident of Bahadur Ke village in Ludhiana, was apprehended by a team of Punjab Police’s Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, upon his arrival from Canada.The accused was wanted in a case registered at the state crime police station, Mohali, under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act and Passport Act, the DGP said.According to police, Karamveer had provided logistical support and a hideout to Lawrence’s brother, Anmol Bishnoi, in the US.The DGP said the AGTF had initiated a look-out circular (LOC) against Karamveer on Sept 3.The development comes close on the heels of Punjab Police, with the assistance of central agencies, securing the extradition of fugitive criminal Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam, a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, from Moldova.Additional director general of police Promod Ban said Karamveer had an extensive criminal history in Punjab, with at least five criminal cases registered against him in connection with murder, attempt to murder, armed robbery, extortion, offences under the Arms Act and other criminal activities.An investigation is underway to establish his operational links, illicit funding channels and connections with other members of the gang, the ADGP said. The action is part of the Punjab Police crackdown on transnational gangster networks being carried out under the directions of chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
