Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh govt has approved a redevelopment project to modernise the iconic ice-skating rink in Shimla, with an estimated investment of Rs 20.22 crore.The initiative aims to strengthen tourism and promote winter sports in the hill town. Established in 1920 during the British era, the rink long served as a landmark attraction at Lakkar Bazar and nurtured generations of ice skaters.
The upcoming transformation will convert the historic venue into a modern, state-of-the-art sports facility designed to meet international standards while preserving its legacy, said an official spokesperson.As part of the plan, outdated structures, including the Old Club House buildings and the servant residence, will be demolished to make way for new infrastructure. Of the total project cost, Rs 16.09 crore has been earmarked for upgrading the rink’s core infrastructure, Rs 2.81 crore for constructing a new Club House building, and Rs 1.21 crore for developing a store, souvenir shop, and essential amenities. An additional Rs 11.20 lakh will be spent on demolition work, said the spokesperson.The revamped facility is expected to attract national and international sporting events, provide improved training opportunities, and significantly boost Shimla’s tourism and sports profile.MSID:: 128641738 413 |
