Chandigarh: Police have launched a massive “blockade” operation across the city, intensifying a crackdown on organised crime following a recent surge in gang warfare and targeted shootings. The two-day special campaign, conducted on March 24 and 25, resulted in the inspection of nearly 8,000 vehicles as authorities move to choke the movement of criminal elements within the Tricity area. During the 48-hour operation, UT police established strategic checkpoints at entry and exit points, crowded markets, and sensitive locations. The results of the sweep included 7,983 vehicles inspected, 437 citations (challans) issued, and 114 vehicles impounded. On the opening day of the operation (Sunday, March 24), officers inspected 3,957 vehicles. Enforcement was heaviest in sectors 11 and 3, where 588 and 567 vehicles were stopped, respectively. Sector 11 police issued a peak of 32 citations, while Sector 3 led the city in vehicle seizures, impounding 15 cars and motorcycles. On Monday, March 25, the operation intensified on the second day with 4,026 vehicle checks. While the number of inspections rose, the number of citations dropped slightly to 203, with 47 vehicles impounded. Sector 11 remained the primary focus area with 434 checks and 37 citations. The Industrial Area saw the highest number of vehicle seizures on the second day, with 10 vehicles taken into custody. Will mark gang vehicles: SSPThe sudden escalation in police presence follows a string of extortion attempts and firing incidents that have rattled the region. Officials said the primary objective is the identification of suspicious vehicles used by gangs to traverse the city’s borders. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur stated that the high-visibility campaign was not a one-off event. “This campaign will continue to ensure effective control over crime and to maintain law and order in the city,” she said, adding that strict action will be taken against any individual operating without proper documentation or violating traffic regulations.MSID:: 129847202 413 |
