Kanpur: A history-sheeter allegedly stopped a constable returning after offering prayers on Tuesday night, demanded extortion money, assaulted him, and vandalised the vehicle he was travelling in, police said. The constable was rescued after PAC personnel intervened. The accused was arrested and sent to jail.The constable Arsh Malik, a resident of Kurirwana village in the Thana Chajlet area of Moradabad, is posted at Mahaula Jail in Etawah. He was returning in the jailer’s car after offering prayers at the city’s Raza Masjid.

As the vehicle reached Kunaira turn in the city, a car blocked its way, said police. The man in the car introduced himself as Sikandar Yadav and demanded extortion money. The constable refused to pay and tried to move forward after identifying himself as a jail employee. The accused allegedly became angry, hurled abuses, and vandalised the car. Police said the car’s windows were broken, and the vehicle was severely damaged.The accused then allegedly pulled the constable out of the car, chased him, and beat him on the road, causing serious injuries. PAC personnel passing through the area intervened and rescued the injured constable. Police said that the accused continued attacking even after the intervention.On being informed, the police reached the spot and took the constable to a safe place. Based on a complaint filed by the victim constable, a case was registered under sections of extortion, assault, intimidation, and vandalism.Station in-charge Amit Mishra said that the accused, Sikandar Yadav, was arrested and sent to jail. “The accused is a history-sheeter and has a total of 16 criminal cases registered against him, including assault, robbery, and intimidation,” he added.
