Dibrugarh: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated the 702-metre-long bridge over the Lohit river at Selek Ghat, Majuli, connecting Majuli with Lakhimpur district. He also launched multiple infrastructure and socio-economic projects worth over Rs 2,218 crore in the riverine district.The bridge, constructed under the Rs 694.77 crore Balichapori-Bongalmora road development project, forms part of the Asom Mala 1.0 programme aimed at upgrading road networks across the state.
Addressing the gathering, the CM said the bridge would reduce travel time, improve transportation facilities and ensure smoother movement of goods and essential services. “The enhanced connectivity will boost trade, healthcare access, and educational mobility across the region,” Sarma said.The 19.457-km corridor will connect Balichapori in Majuli with Bongalmora in Lakhimpur district through two bridges over the Lohit and Subansiri rivers. While the Lohit bridge was inaugurated on Thursday, the 2,830-metre-long Subansiri bridge is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed within a year.Key projects unveiled during the event include construction works linked to the Majuli-Nimati connecting bridge approach road, development of the 7.15-km Majuli–Nimati road project, construction of the Balichapori–Baghbar connecting road, development of administrative buildings and district-level govt offices and expansion of cultural and institutional infrastructure.The initiatives aim to strengthen connectivity between Majuli and the mainland, improve governance infrastructure and accelerate socio-economic growth in the riverine district.In a parallel push for women’s economic empowerment, the CM distributed Rs 10,000 each as entrepreneurship grants to 31,952 women from Majuli under the state’s flagship Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan.
