Bengaluru: The state transport department Saturday clarified that its previous order on mandatory installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) has not been withdrawn, dismissing viral claims on social media and some television channels that motorists no longer required to replace old number plates. The department said the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) had mandated HSRP for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. In line with this directive, the state govt issued a notification on Sept 17, 2023, making the installation of HSRP compulsory. An official said the deadline for compliance was extended five times due to various reasons, meanwhile the matter also reached the Karnataka high court. During the hearing, the court directed the state not to take any further precipitate steps or decisions regarding the fixation of HSRP plates. However, it did not grant a stay on the department’s order mandating HSRP. The official clarified the rule requiring HSRP installation remains in force. However, no enforcement action is currently being taken against vehicle owners who have not installed the plates, as the matter is pending before the high court.Officials reiterated that the mandate is in accordance with MoRTH guidelines and earlier directions of the Supreme Court.
