Kolkata: Two theft cases were reported from the Port division of the city, with the twin incidents at Ekbalpore and Watgunge reportedly leading to a loss of more than Rs 28 lakh. In both cases, the domestic and workplace staff are under police scrutiny.Nelofar Khatoon (39), a resident of Ekbalpore Lane, told police that a theft took place at her home on March 8 between 2.30 pm and 10 pm. An unknown person broke open an almirah and stole cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh. She alleged that her present domestic help had the maximum access to this almirah. According to the complaint, the stolen cash was Rs 5,24,000. The missing ornaments included one gold hand ring, two pairs of gold ear rings weighing about 12 grams, and two earrings weighing about 9 grams. Police said the role of two servants was being examined along with some local burglars. No arrest was reported. In a separate case linked to Watgunge, garment trader Md Shams alleged theft of goods worth about Rs 12.6 lakh from his godown located at Mansatala Row, in Kidderpore. His car parked outside the premises was stolen too. Shams told police that the prime accused, who worked under him and stayed at the godown for supervision, was present there even the next morning.
