Nagpur: The modernisation of Indira Gandhi Govt Medical College and Hospital, also known as Mayo Hospital, has gained momentum, with a helipad planned to be built on the roof of the 500-bed medical complex under construction on the hospital premises. The helipad would enable critical patients to be brought directly by air from remote areas of central India to support treatment within the golden hour in emergencies.The 11-storey medical complex is being constructed at a cost of about Rs146 crore within the premises of Mayo Hospital. Initially, a seven-storey building was planned, but a proposal to add another four floors has been approved, and efforts are also underway to increase the bed capacity to about 600.In February 2024, the groundbreaking of various development works at Mayo Hospital was performed by Union minister Nitin Gadkari, after which work on the medical complex gained pace. The entire building is expected to be handed over to the hospital administration in 2027.A helipad is proposed on the roof of the new 11-storey medical complex. Officials said this would avoid delays in road transport and save time, particularly for patients with brain disorders, heart disorders, or other life-threatening conditions.BOXHospital capacity to rise to 1,350The new medical complex will bring major additions to the infrastructure facilities of Mayo Hospital. After the project is completed, the total bed capacity of the hospital is expected to reach about 1,350. Along with this, there is a possibility of an increase in seats for postgraduate medical education.
