Heavy Rain floods Sonari, Sivasagar & parts of Jorhat; water enters homes | Guwahati News

Dibrugarh: Heavy early-morning rain on Sunday flooded Sonari, Sivasagar and parts of Jorhat.In Charaideo district’s Sonari, Dhodar Ali Road and several internal streets remained knee-deep in water for hours, with water entering homes and damaging household goods and documents.“I have lived in Sonari all my life, but in the past 35 years, I have never seen flooding like this. Our furniture and important documents got soaked. This is unprecedented and totally avoidable if drainage work is done properly. The drains simply cannot handle rain of this intensity,” said Usha Das, a Ward 6 resident.Residents blamed the flooding on poor drainage and demanded immediate repairs and long-term mitigation. “Rainwater accumulates on the roads because there is no proper outlet. Even one heavy shower turns the streets into rivers,” said Krishna Bora, a Dhodar Ali Road shopkeeper.The crisis coincided with a deadlock in the Sonari Municipal Board after 10 councillors moved a no-confidence motion against chairperson Tilak Chandra Neog. Residents said several civic works remained stalled since then.Sivasagar town was also hit, with all 14 municipal wards reportedly under knee-deep water. Dolmukh Chariali, Muktinath Chariali, Melachakar, Phukan Nagar, Amolapatty, BG Road, HCB Road, ONGC Colony, Babupatty and Boarding Road were among the worst affected.Sivasagar Municipal Board chairperson Smriti Rekha Dutta said, “Our teams are working on the ground to clear the waterlogged areas at the earliest. We are prioritising the worst-hit wards first. We expect the situation to improve soon.”In Jorhat, several localities were inundated after drains overflowed. “Immediate relief work has been launched, and pumps deployed where needed,” Jorhat Municipal Board chairperson Lakhimi Khargharia said.
