T’puram: Heavy rain that lashed the district over the past few days has caused extensive damage to agricultural crops, affecting 23.6 hectares of farmland across three blocks, according to a report released by the principal agricultural officer. As per the assessment completed till 4pm on Saturday, Neyyattinkara block recorded the highest crop loss, with damage reported over 22.7 hectares. Parassala block recorded crop damage across 0.8 hectares, while Kattakkada block reported losses over 0.1 hectares. A total of 141 farmers have been affected. The preliminary estimate puts the financial loss at Rs 29.1 lakh, officials said. Detailed assessments are expected to continue as rain persists in several parts of the district. With heavy rainfall continuing, the district disaster management authority (DDMA) has activated 24-hour taluk-level control rooms to coordinate emergency response and aid the public. Control rooms are functioning round the clock in Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Nedumangad, Chirayinkeezhu, Varkala and Kattakkada taluks. Residents have been advised to contact the respective emergency operation centres in case of rain-related emergencies or disasters. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation and have urged farmers and residents living in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Further assessments of crop losses and relief measures will be undertaken based on field inspections as weather conditions improve.
