Chandigarh: A 104-year-old man successfully avoided a full leg amputation despite severe blood flow issues, setting an example of how a healthy lifestyle can protect the body well into old age.The patient visited vascular surgeon Dr Ajay Savlania at PGI after experiencing blackening in his big toe — a critical sign of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). PAD occurs when blood vessels in the limbs narrow or become blocked, reducing oxygen supply and causing tissue to die. While blood vessel narrowing often develops naturally with extreme age, the patient’s remarkably clean background prevented earlier or more severe heart and circulatory complications, doctors said.Because he arrived before the damage spread, surgeons only needed to shave off the dead tip of his big toe, preserving the base so he can still bear weight and walk normally without a noticeable limp.“We examined him and did ultrasound doppler and MR angiography scan to diagnose the arterial blockade in his affected leg. Our team treated him with angioplasty to open his artery. He had complete relief from pain and we could save his limb. It was so gratifying to see him walking pain free. He is now 106 years,” said Dr Ajay. His surgeon highlights his everyday habits as a major factor in his extraordinary resilience. “He eats simple, traditional meals like khichdi, porridge, lentils, rice, fruits, and nuts, completely avoiding processed foods,” said Dr Ajay. He said, “Rather than daily walk, his exercise comes from devotion and traditional dance routines and yoga, keeping his body active and agile. He never smoked — a habit that typically accelerates blood vessel blockage decades earlier.”Medical experts note that while aging can naturally narrow blood vessels, a healthy lifestyle drastically delays severe disease and gives doctors a much better chance to save limbs when issues do arise. Today, the 106-year-old walks with minimal support and serves as an inspiring example in the hospital ward for other patients facing similar conditions.
