Kanpur: A 32-year-old health department employee posted as an eye examination officer at the Community Health Centre in Sarvankheda died during treatment after allegedly consuming poison outside his house in Kalyanpur following a dispute with his wife on Tuesday evening. The deceased, Aseem Katiyar, was admitted in a critical condition to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where he died at around 2.30 am on Wednesday.Following the incident, family members accused his wife, son and mother-in-law of mentally harassing him. Police said complaints filed by both sides are under investigation.The deceased’s younger brother, Anubhav Katiyar, BJP OBC Morcha district president, alleged that Aseem had been under mental stress for a long time because of family disputes and financial control. He claimed that despite repeated complaints, the police failed to take timely action.Aseem, a resident of Khyora Nai Basti in Nawabganj, had married Shweta, a resident of Nekpur in Farrukhabad, in 2010. The couple had a 14-year-old son, Vaishvik. Shweta is a teacher at a primary school in Kannauj.According to Anubhav, Aseem built a house in Mahabalipuram, Awas Vikas area, in 2015 by taking a bank loan of around Rs 40 lakh and registered it in his wife’s name. He alleged that after the house was built, Shweta’s mother, Karuna, started living with them, that Aseem’s entire salary was controlled by his wife, and that he was given only Rs 10,000 for his personal expenses.He further alleged that in May 2026, Aseem was assaulted by his wife, 14-year-old son and mother-in-law, who allegedly struck him on the head with a glass bottle. He claimed that after receiving information, he reached the spot and protested. About a month ago, Aseem was allegedly forced to leave the house and had since been living elsewhere.Anubhav said his brother repeatedly approached the police station and outpost seeking help, but no effective action was taken. On Tuesday, Aseem reportedly returned to his house, but when the door was not opened, he allegedly consumed poison outside the residence.Shweta denied all the allegations and accused her husband of demanding Rs 10 lakh as dowry, assaulting her and issuing threats. The deceased’s family alleged that he had been under prolonged mental harassment and became emotionally distressed after learning that a case had been registered against him, following which he took the extreme step.DCP West S. M. Qasim Abidi said the matter is being investigated and further legal action will be taken based on statements from both sides, available evidence and other facts.
