Margao: Overflowing sewage in a locality behind the military camp at Dicarpale, Davorlim, has left the residents worried. The area, which has 30 to 35 houses, is not covered by the sewerage network, and very few households have functional septic tanks. Social workers from the locality warned that the stagnation of sewage water could trigger an epidemic, particularly with the monsoon season approaching.A social worker said, “This poses a high risk not only to the residents, but those frequenting the area are also exposed to the filth. The source of contamination should be traced, and those found releasing raw sewage into the open should be penalised,” he added.People living here said they have written to the local panchayat, the health department and the collector, but no action has been forthcoming from the authorities.Residents pointed out that sewage water earlier drained into a private property, but the flow was blocked after a compound wall was constructed around it, which created stagnation in the locality ‘s sewage. The locals have now urged govt authorities to intervene and ensure proper sanitation and waste disposal facilities are provided in the area. They reiterated that such waste water stagnation can lead to severe diseases, and sought action.
