Chennai: Madras high court on Wednesday reserved its order on a plea moved by AIADMK MLA and its assembly whip Agri S S Krishnamurthy challenging an amendment made to the resolution passed in Tamil Nadu assembly opposing Karnataka’s proposed construction of a dam in Mekedatu. The amendment calls for setting up a tribunal to address the issue.Concluding the final hearing, the first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan reserved their orders.Earlier, the state submitted that the resolution was passed unanimously in the assembly with the consent of the petitioner and the party he represents, and therefore, he cannot approach the court after supporting the resolution in the assembly. According to the petitioner, on June 19, Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution opposing Karnataka’s proposal. At the conclusion of the debate, the resolution was amended to include a demand for the constitution of a tribunal to address the Mekedatu issue.The amendment was opposed by AIADMK, PMK and CPI. Krishnamurthy contended that the amendment was not part of the draft resolution circulated to MLAs on June 18, and that it was adopted without discussion on the floor of the House, though the final resolution forwarded to Union govt said it had been adopted unanimously.
